Ken Carr-Braint, the former President of the Canadian Weightlifting Federation, has died at the age of 88.

Carr-Braint also served on the organising committee of several World Championship events and was a weightlifting official, presiding over competition at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.

Prior to his work with the national governing body, Carr-Braint founded the Ontario Weightlifting Association and the Ontario and Canadian Youth Championships.

In 1954, Carr-Braint also founded the Apollo Barbell Club in an empty garage which would go on to become one of the most respected weightlifting training centres in the county.

The facility has produced a number of international and national champions.

After establishing the Apollo Club, Carr-Braint guided several local lifters in Olympic Games including at Tokyo 1964 and Munich 1972.

He also coached at World Championship events, the Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games.

In 1992, Carr-Braint was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame.

Two years ago, the Apollo Club was recognised with a special award presented by the Ontario Weightlifting Association for more than 60 years of outstanding service to the sport.
