Judo in Bangladesh has been given a boost after the All Japan Judo Federation (AJJF) donated 141 mats to aid the development of the sport in the nation.

The Bangladesh Judo Federation (BJF) were given the equipment to help boys and girls in the country develop their skills prior to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and Shunan City in Yamaguchi Prefecture made the donation along with the AJJF.

It came as part of the Japanese Government’s Sport for Tomorrow programme, a three-step initiative, first officially presented at the International Olympic Committee Session in Buenos Aires in 2013 where Tokyo won the rights to stage the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

The BJF was presented with the mats at a ceremony which took place at Sultana Kamal Mahila Complex Dhanmondi.

The 28-year-old is currently ranked at number 161 in the world in the women’s 70 kilograms weight division.

Akther Priyanka finished fifth at the Cadet Asian Championships last year in the 44kg category, while Tabassum Toma Tahmida was seventh in the 52kg event.

The country has never won an Olympic medal of any colour in eight appearances at the Games.

The AJJF also donated mats to Senegal in August of last year.

The African nation was given 50 reusable tatamis and 50 judogis.
