Italian teenager Giacomo Bertagnolli claimed his first win of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Alpine Skiing World Cup season after taking the men’s visually impaired giant slalom title in Kuhtai today.

The 17-year-old, guided by Fabrizio Casal, posted two leading runs to secure top honours in 2 min 00.35sec on the last day of action in the Austrian resort.

He beat Slovakia’s Miroslav Haraus and guide Maros Hudik, who have won medals in technical events at Paralympic and world level, by 2.88 seconds.

Haraus’s team-mate Jakub Krako, the Sochi 2014 Paralympics Games silver medallist guided by Branislav Brosman, was 4.14 seconds back in third.

Another youngster, Great Britain’s Millie Knight, took her first win of the season in the women’s visually impaired giant slalom with guide Brett Wild.

The 17-year-old World Championship silver medallist clocked a time of 2:14.60, finishing 0.75 seconds ahead of Australia’s Melissa Perrine, guided by Andrew Bor.

Slovakia’s Henrieta Farkasova, who won yesterday’s giant slalom, was 1.34 seconds off the pace in third with guide Natalia Subrtova.

World and Paralympic silver medallist Andrea Rothfuss took her second giant slalom win in the space of 24 hours in the women’s standing.

A time of 2:14.78 saw the German beat the Canadian duo of Alana Ramsay, 0.77 seconds back in the runners-up spot, and Erin Latimer, 7.04 seconds behind in third.

Australia’s Mitchell Gourley won his first World Cup race since 2013 in the men’s standing giant slalom.

Gourley came back from a third-placed first run to grab victory in 1:59.57, condemning Slovakia’s Martin France to second in 2:00.51.

The United States’ Thomas Walsh secured his 100 per cent podium record from Kuhtai with a third-place finish in 2:00.60.

The close rivalry between world and Paralympic champion Anna Schaffelhuber of Germany and Austria’s Claudia Loesch continued in the women’s sitting giant slalom.

Schaffelhuber did not finish her first run yesterday, leaving the door wide open for Loesch to seal the win.

But today the German made up for lost time, registering two leading runs to triumph in 2:14.83.

Loesch came second in 2:19.12, while Schaffelhuber’s compatriot Anna-Lena Forster completed the podium in 2:25.45.

Austria’s Roman Rabl claimed a second men’s sitting giant slalom victory in as many days, beating 2013 world champion Taiki Morii of Japan by 0.66 seconds with a time of 2:04.22.

Morii’s fellow countryman Takeshi Suzuki was the leader after the first run today, but dropped down the order to eventually end up third in 2:05.66.

Skiers will now move onto the next World Cup in Swiss resort St. Moritz, where action is due to get underway on Monday (December 19).

They will be looking to prove their form in the build-up to the 2017 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships in Tarvisio in Italy, scheduled to take place from January 22 to 31.
