The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) World Games 2017 will be held in Sharjah following approval by the governing body's Executive Board.

The proposed preliminary sports programme at the competition, which runs from November 30 to December 9 in the emirate, includes athletics, archery, powerlifting, shooting, para taekwondo and wheelchair fencing and will host athletes from under 20’s to Open and Master classes, which are for competitors aged 40 or over.

All competition will take place at the state-of-the-art sport facilities at the Al Thiqah Club.

The Games will return to the site of the IWAS World Games in 2011 and the third largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates behind Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The IWAS General Assembly 2017 will also be hosted in conjunction with the Games, which will include elections for the IWAS President and Executive Board members.

Subject to contract, the entry process for teams will open on February 1, 2017 following a site-visit made by IWAS in January 2017.

Hosts Russia finished top of the medals table at the previous World Games held in Sochi in 2015.

More than 800 athletes from 34 countries took part in the Games with the sport programme consisting of athletics, archery, arm sport, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo.

After securing 123 gold, 104 silver and 95 bronze medals, Russia finished as the best nation at the Games with China and Poland finishing well adrift in second and third having earned 25 and 10 gold medals in their respective tallies at the end of competition.

A six-strong Vietnamese team, who were participating for the first time after receiving funding from Parasport Foundation Vietnam, left the Russian city with seven medals.
