Home favourite Balint Korpasi claimed his first major title at the Wrestling World Championships for non-Olympic weights after beating Moldova’s Daniel Cataraga to 71 kilograms Greco-Roman gold in Hungary’s capital Budapest.

Korpasi, who began 2016 with victory at the Grand Prix of Hungary in Szombathely, closed out the year with a 2-1 win over the 2015 European under-23 champion in a bruising final at the SYMA Sports and Conference Centre.

Azerbaijan’s Hasan Aliyev, the 2010 world champion, forged a 2-1 win over Russia’s Adam Kurak to take one of the two bronze medals in a reversal of their final at the 2014 European Championships.

The other went the way of Romania’s Ilie Cojocari, who overcame Serbia’s Aleksandar Maksimovic 5-2.

In the men’s 61kg freestyle final, the United States’ Logan Stieber held on for an 8-4 win against Baku 2015 European Games silver medallist Beka Lomtadze of Georgia having established a six-point lead in the second period with a pair of low-level attacks.

Victory for Stieber, who needed a pair of last-second victories in the morning session’s quarter-finals and semi-finals to reach the gold medal match, ensured a first international title on his Senior World Championships debut.

Azerbaijan’s Akhmednabi Gvarzatilov defeated France’s Iurii Siemakin 4-1 to secure a bronze medal and was joined on the third step of the podium by Russia’s Akhmed Chakaev, a 7-4 victor at the expense of Iran’s Behnam Eshagh Ehsanpoor.

Also triumphing today was Japan’s Mayu Mukaida, who condemned Russia’s Irina Ologonova to a World Championship silver medal for the third year in a row with a technical fall win in the women’s 55kg freestyle final.

It is the second time Mukaida has won a global crown this year, having also come out on top at the Junior World Championships in French city Mâcon in August.

The two successes build on the cadet world titles she won in 2012 and 2013 and her gold medal-winning performance at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Chinese city Nanjing.

Mukaida, one of the heirs apparent to take on the mantle of Japan’s 13-time world champion Saori Yoshida, outscored her four opponents 43-2 today.

One of those was Kazakhstan’s Aiym Abdildina, who recovered from a 10-0 semi-final loss to beat Hungary’s Ramona Galambos by fall and claim bronze.

Mongolia’s Otgontsetseg Davaasukh beat Belarus’ Katsiaryna Hanchar Yanushkevich by technical fall to join Abdildina in finishing third.

United World Wrestling (UWW) announced the addition of a 2016 World Championship for non-Olympic weight categories in May.

World Championships in all 24 style and weight categories are held in non-Olympic years, but until now, an Olympic-year event for weight classes not included at the Games hadn't been on the calendar.
