Home favourite Son Wan Ho reached the men’s singles semi-finals at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Korea Masters today as the top seeds in each of the five competitions remained on course for success at the Seogwipo Olympic Stadium.

The 28-year-old eased to a 21-17, 21-15 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Hsueh Hsuan Yi and now faces a last-four encounter with India's Parupalli Kashyap, a 18-21, 21-8, 21-16 winner over sixth seed Jeon Hyeok Jin of South Korea.

Compatriot Sung Ji Hyun is through to the semi-finals of the women’s singles after she overcame China’s Chen Xiaoxin 21-12, 21-15.

Next up for her is a meeting with fellow home favourite Ga Eun Kim, who defeated eighth seed Chia Hsin Lee of Chinese Taipei 22-20, 21-18 in the last eight.

Men’s doubles top seeds Yang Lee and Jhe-Huei Lee of Chinese Taipei continued to justify their standing with a convincing 21-14, 21-10 win over seventh seeds Hiroyuki Saeki and Ryota Taohata of Japan.

The same could be said of the highest-ranked women’s doubles pairing as South Korea’s Jung Kyung Eun and Shin Seung Chan beat Japan’s Koharu Yonemoto and Shiho Tanaka 21-13, 21-15.

In the mixed doubles, top seeds Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na defeated fellow South Koreans Kang Ji Wook and Eom Hye Won 15-21, 21-19, 21-18.

Arguably the most surprising result of the day came in the men’s singles with third seed Lee Dong Keun of South Korea falling to a 19-21, 16-21 defeat at the hands of unseeded Daren Liew of Malaysia.

The biggest casualty from the women's singles competition was fourth seed Ayumi Mine of Japan, losing 13-21, 5-21 to unseeded Jang Mi Lee of South Korea.

Action at the BWF Masters, a Grand Prix Gold level event, is due to continue tomorrow.
