Top seed Son Wan-ho progressed to the third round of the men's singles at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Korea Masters at the Seogwipo Olympic Stadium today.

The 28-year-old, the favourite to win his home competition, defeated Japan's Yusuke Onodera 21-16, 21-16 in round two.

Second seed Lee Hyun-il was not so fortunate as the South Korean former World Championship bronze medallist was forced to retire in his clash with Chinese Taipei's Chang En-chia.

Chang led 21-15, 11-4 before injury ended the home player's competition early.

All three of the top seeds are from the host nation with third-ranked Lee Dong-keun progressing today thanks to a 21-10, 21-10 win over the Czech Republic's Milan Ludik.

Chinese Taipei's fourth seed Wang Tzu-wei was a casualty however, losing to Indian Parupalli Kashyap 21-15, 9-21, 21-19.

In the women's competition at the Grand Prix Gold level event, South Korea again have the top seed.

Number one ranked Sung Ji-hyun defeated Japan's Yukino Nakai 21-11, 21-15 in round one as competition began.

Japan's third seed Yui Hashimoto was among the other players to progress, as she recorded a 21-18, 13-21, 21-16 win over South Korean Kim Ye-ji.

Another Japanese player went through in the form of Aya Ohori, with the 2013 Asian junior champion defeating Sim Yu-jin of the host nation 21-17, 23-21.

Competition will continue in Seogwipo tomorrow.
