Japan’s Yuki Matsuyama narrowly escaped a surprise group stage exit in the boys’ singles tournament the day after helping his nation win team gold at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Junior Championships in Cape Town.

The 19th seed suffered a shock defeat to North Korea’s Kim Song Il 13-11, 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 6-11, 6-11, 11-5 but was still able to squeeze through to the next round in second place at the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World venue.

Matsuyama, whose victory over South Korea’s Kim Dae-woo clinched the team title for his country yesterday, progressed thanks to a 11-13, 11-3, 11-4, 11-3, 11-7 win against the Czech Republic’s Vlastimil Buben in his opening match.

He was expected to top the group as the highest seeded player in the pool and may now face a trickier draw.

Sweden’s Truls Moregard, the 34th seed, also endured defeat on his way to prolonging his stay at the tournament in the South African city.

In the girls’ singles event, Serbian Izabela Lupulesku booked her place in the main draw with two victories.

Lupulesku began with a win as she overcame Puerto Rico’s Gabriela Diaz 11-6, 11-3, 11-6, 11-13, 11-9 and assured herself of progression by beating Canada’s Justin Yeung 11-3, 11-7, 11-6, 11-3.

It proved to be a successful day for the Serbian team as Dragana Vignjevic also qualified, thanks largely to a superb 11-7, 5-11, 5-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-5 win against Chen Ying-Chen of Chinese Taipei.
