Turkish weightlifter Sibel Özkan will officially lose her Beijing 2008 Olympic silver medal after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her appeal against her retroactive disqualification from the 48 kilograms event by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for doping.

Ozkan finished second in the competition at the Games in the Chinese capital but was ordered to return her medal by the IOC in July after her sample was retested using up-to-date methods.

The IOC confirmed she had tested positive for banned substance stanozolol as part of the retests they are conducting from Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

The 28-year-old, who successfully defended her European title in the 48kg event in Førde in Norway earlier this year, then contested the decision of the IOC to the CAS in August.

In her appeal, Özkan claimed she had failed for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid, as a result of a contaminated whey protein supplement she could have taken on a "regular basis before and during the Beijing Games".

According to the CAS arbitral award, she also offered to "provide substantial assistance" to the IOC by "disclosure of sensitive information about the Turkish Weightlifting Federation".

The CAS said Özkan vowed to give the information "in exchange for a possible agreement with the respondent to dispose of this case".

The CAS threw out the appeal as they found "no reason" to overturn the initial ruling from the IOC.

"The athlete’s appeal has been dismissed and the decision taken by the IOC Disciplinary Commission on 21 July 2016 is confirmed," the CAS statement read.

"As a consequence, the results obtained by Sibel Özkan Konak during the Beijing Olympiad, including a silver medal in the -48kg weightlifting event, are disqualified and the athlete must return her medal, pins and diploma."

Ozkan is one of 47 weightlifters to be sanctioned by the IOC as part of the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 retests.

Weightlifting has been one of the most affected sports, with 37 medals in the sport from the two editions of the Olympics due to be reallocated.

The CAS decision confirms that Chinese Taipei’s Chen Wei-Ling would be upgraded to 48kg silver at Beijing 2008, with bronze going to Im Jyoung-Hwa of South Korea.
