Chinese Taipei's Wang Tzu-wei was among those to progress to the second round of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Macau Open as the men's singles began the tournament today.

The 21-year-old, a former World Junior Championships silver medallist, defeated Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong 22-20, 21-14 to make it through at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion.

The sixth seed was joined in the next stage by his compatriot Chen Chun-wei, who benefited from the premature withdrawal of India's seventh seed Prannoy Kumar.

Chen was 6-2 up in the first game when Kumar pulled out of the clash at the Grand Prix Gold level tournament.

The top seed at the tournament, Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien-chen, was given a bye straight into round two.

The women's tournament, where the top seed is India's London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, begins tomorrow.

She could face an all-Indian final against second seed P.V Sindhu, the Olympic silver medallist at Rio 2016 and the China Superseries champion.
