The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) has signed an agreement with Peace and Sport which sees the organisations join forces to promote the sport around the world as a tool for social development.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by WTF President Chungwon Choue and Peace and Sport founder and President Joel Bouzou during the organisation's annual Forum in Monaco.

The agreement, which will last five years, means both parties will commit to "promote peace, social cohesion and coexistence, and to improve living conditions via taekwondo".

It also encourages education, training and responsibility among youth through taekwondo practice, and calls for cooperation between both organisations.

The WTF already runs the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) which aims to teach the sport to refugees and displaced persons worldwide.

"This is a great step forward for the humanitarian activities of the WTF and Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation," said Choue.

"To work with an organisation that is as respected and well known as Peace and Sport opens a new range of opportunities for taekwondo in its role as a vehicle for good."

The agreement was signed the same day the WTF was named "Federation of the Year" during Peace and Sport's annual awards ceremony.

Created in 2008, the annual awards recognise organisations and individuals who make an "outstanding contribution to peace, dialogue and social stability in the world through sport".

The WTF's award recognises the sporting federation that makes an "outstanding contribution to peace, dialogue and social stability in the world through sport".

The WTF received the award due to the efforts of its own charity programme, the World Taekwondo Cares Programme (WTCP), which promotes the sport in developing countries.

The WTCP and the THF have carried out taekwondo programmes in Syrian refugee camps in Turkey and Jordan, and among persons displaced by the earthquake in Nepal.

A taekwondo Academy in Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan is currently being run by two instructors.

The THF also teach the values of Olympism and global citizenship alongside taekwondo.

In 2017, the WTCP and THF are planning to open an Academy for refugees in Rwanda.
