Ng Ka Long made history today as he became the first host nation player to win the men’s singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Hong Kong Superseries.

Prior to today, no player from Hong Kong had won the men's event since its inauguration in 1982.

However the 22-year-old, a former world junior doubles champion, claimed his maiden Superseries title after beating India’s Sameer Verma at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon.

Ng prevailed 21-14, 10-21, 21-11 in front of a lively crowd of around 6,000 people.

"I used to watch the Hong Kong Open when I was a little kid and dreamed of one day being part of it in the future," Ng told the South China Morning Post.

"I am so happy it has come true as winning the Hong Kong Open is a big moment in my career."

In the women's singles competition, Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei became the new world number one after she defeated P.V Sindhu of India in the final.

Tai stunned Olympic champion Carolina Marin yesterday by earning a hard-fought 21-17, 14-21, 21-16 triumph and continued her sublime form today.

The tournament's fourth seed clinched the title after securing a 21-15, 21-17 straight games victory.

"My fans have kept telling me I might be able to get to the world number one spot in Hong Kong if I won the tournament but this is not my main concern," Tai, who goes above Spaniard Marin in the standings, said.

"Sindhu is tall and fast, and came to Hong Kong in great form as she won the China Open the previous week.

"Today she was really fast on the court but I was able to minimise my own mistakes and that’s why I probably won."

Tai is the second Taiwanese world number one in badminton after women’s doubles pair Cheng Wen-Hsing and Chien Yu-Chin also made it to the summit in 2009.

Elsewhere, Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda became only the second Japanese men’s doubles pair to win a Superseries title after they defeated Denmark’s Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen 21-19, 21-19.

Women’s doubles duo Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl avenged last week’s China Open loss to China’s Li Yinhui and Huang Dongping as they won their second Superseries title of the year.

The Danish pair made light work of their opponents as they collected a convincing 21-19, 21-10 win.

"It’s hard to believe we’ve won this tournament, we’ve been struggling in some of the early matches," said Rytter Juhl.

"We had a good talk with our coach Lars.

"I’m getting emotional because it’s his last tournament so we really wanted to give him a win.

"He’s been there for us for many years."

Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto had never taken a game off their compatriots Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir in their three previous mixed doubles meetings.

That did not change today as the Olympic champions proved too strong for their compatriots and won the title 21-19, 21-17.

"It’s an incredible feeling," said Natsir.

“After we got the Olympic gold medal, people probably thought we would want to rest and not pursue other achievements.

"But we proved ourselves once again in China and Hong Kong."
