Brady Ellison achieved a world record qualification score in the men’s recurve event as the Indoor Archery World Cup season got underway in the Moroccan city Marrakesh.

The American was a class above the rest of the field on the first day of competition, hitting the 10 ring on 58 occasions during qualification.

He would only shoot outside the ring twice, but by scoring nine both times he was able to finish on 598 points to break a 15-year-old world record.

Italy’s Matteo Fissore would finish second in the standings but ended some way back on 587, with the United States’ Victor Wunderle third on the same score, having shot less in the 10 ring.

The women’s recurve standings were led by Aida Roman, with the Mexican qualifying first on 584.

Britain’s Bryony Pitman and Mexico’s Gabriela Bayardo completed the top three positions by ending on 581 and 576 respectively.

The Netherlands’ Mike Schloesser topped the men’s compound qualification standings falling narrowly short of equalling his world record of 600.

Only one of his shots would end outside the 10 ring, leaving the Dutchman one short of the maximum score.

"After the 600, every qualification I was really nervous," said Schloesser.

"Not anymore, I’m not thinking about it and just trying my best.

"To be honest, with the nine I shot I was thinking about it.

"That’s the reason why I probably shot the nine.

"It’s hard to concentrate for 60 arrows in a row.”

Denmark’s Stephan Hansen and The Netherlands’ Peter Elzinga were second and third respectively by scoring 596 and 594.

South Africa’s Danelle Wentzel led the women’s compound standings by scoring 593, with Italy’s Marcella Tonioli lying second on 589.

Denmark’s Sarah Sonnichsen finished third in qualification by ending on 586.

The World Cup will conclude tomorrow.
