Russia’s Vladimir Uzunian and Sergei Margarian booked their places in International Boxing Association (AIBA) Youth World Championships finals in front of the home crowd in Saint Petersburg today.

The pair had vastly different semi-final matches at the 7,000 capacity Sibur Arena.

Uzunian enjoyed a comfortable victory in the men’s’ 91 kilogram heavyweight competition, with the judges awarded him a unanimous verdict against Uzbekistan’s Shokhruz Rakhimov.

Four judges gave Uzunian a 30-27 margin of victory, with the final official scoring the contest 30-26 in the Russian’s favour.

All five judges’ scorecards are being used to determine the winner of each bout as part of the format of the fifth edition of the event.

Uzunian is now due to face Dainier Christian Pero Justiz in the gold medal match after Cuban earned a 5-0 victory over India’s Naman Tanwar.

While Uzunian’s success was clear, home fans were left holding their breath over Margarian’s progression in the 64kg light welterweight competition.

A closely fought bout with Ireland’s Gabriel Dossen ultimately ended in a split decision 3-2 win for the Russian.

After his narrow victory, Margarian will face the challenge of Turkey’s Tugrulhan Erdemir in the gold medal bout.

Erdemir will go into the contest on a high, having earned a convincing 5-0 win over Pavel Mikhailiuk of Belarus in their semi-final encounter.
