The International Association of Sport for Para-athletes with an Intellectual Disability (Inas) has opened registration for the 2017 General Assembly in Brisbane.

The gathering of the Inas’ membership is due to be held from April 20 to 24 in the Australian city.

Brisbane is also playing host to the Global Games, the organisation’s flagship event, in 2019.

The General Assembly, which also incorporates the Inas Conference and Inas Awards, will offer delegates the opportunity to visit the venues set to be used for the Games.

The event is expected to attract around 1,000 athletes with an intellectual impairment and it will be the first time the Games has gone to Oceania.

The 2019 edition will also serve as an opportunity for athletes to earn qualification for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

It will be the fifth Global Games in history, the last coming in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito last year.

Inas have set a deadline of December 15 for organisers to submit an "intention to enter" the General Assembly.

It comes amid a packed year of major international Inas events, which are also scheduled to be staged in 2017.

This includes the World Skiing Championships in Gourette in France from March 27 to April 1, and the World Athletics Championships in Bangkok from May 12 to May 19.

The year is rounded off by the Inas World Swimming Championships, due to be held in Morelia in Mexico from November 27 to December 4.
