Britain’s Natasha Gale reached the middleweight gold medal match of the European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) European Women’s Boxing Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The 28-year-old was awarded a 40-36 victory on two of the judges’ scorecards in the 75 kilogram competition, with the third judge determining the contest to be a tie.

She will now seek to become only the second British boxer to earn a women’s European Championship crown after Nicola Adams, when she faces France’s Maily Nicar in the final.

Nicar defeated Ireland’s Christine Desmond on a split decision verdict in their semi-final encounter.

Finland’s Mira Potkonen, who won Olympic bronze after beating Ireland’s Katie Taylor at the Rio 2016 Olympics, guaranteed herself of at least a silver in Sofia.

She earned a unanimous win after a convincing performance in her under 60kg flyweight semi-final with England’s Sandy Ryan.

Potkonen will now face the challenge of Russia’s Daria Abramova in the gold medal contest, following her unanimous win over Turkey’s Esra Yildiz.

Azerbaijan’s Anna Alimardanova and Bulgaria’s Stanimira Petrova reached the 54kg final after unanimous wins over France’s Delphine Mancini and Russia’s Viktoriia Kuleshova respectively.

There was another clear victory in the women’s 48kg division with Bulgaria’s Sevda Asenova easing past Russia’s Ekaterina Pinigina.

She will now face Sweden’s Lise Sandebjer, who earned a split decision victory over Italy’s Stephanie Silva.
