American skeleton athlete John Daly has announced that he is coming out of retirement in a bid to put his 2014 Winter Olympic medal heartbreak behind him.

The 31-year-old called time on his career shortly after losing control at the start of his fourth and final run at Sochi 2014, costing him the chance of a bronze medal.

His sled came loose from the starting grooves and he could not recover from the resulting skid.

Daly had been in a battle with compatriot Matt Antoine for the third step on the podium but after heading into the last slide in fourth, he had to settle for a 15th place finish.

Daly has now begun training again at the sliding track in Lake Placid and is eyeing a spot on the American team at Pyeongchang 2018.

"I started to get a tiny smolder of a flame back, I started to miss it a little," Daly said.

"The last picture [in Sochi] anyone saw was that awful picture of me sliding through the finish with my head in my hands.

"That picture and that last interview where I was trying my hardest to keep it together choking back tears.

"It was horrible.

"I was completely devastated.

"My world fell apart in an instant."

Daly's career to date includes a World Championship gold medal - which he achieved in the mixed team event in St Moritz in Switzerland in 2013.

He began working in medical sales following his initial retirement from skeleton.

Earlier this month, Antoine was selected to headline the US men's team during the new International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup season.
