Abolfazl Aramideh of Iran, a 2016 Asian Cadet Championships bronze medallist who in recent months has become severely ill, has received the United World Wrestling (UWW) Endurance Trophy.

Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Masoud Soltanifar presented the prize to the 15-year-old to coincide with Universal Children's Day.

In July, the 15-year-old Iranian freestyle wrestler pinned Abdymalik Karachov of Kyrgyzstan to win bronze at the Asian Cadet Championships in Taiwan.

The Iranian cadet squad finished third in the Championship overall, collecting four gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

Soon after the competition, however, Aramideh was diagnosed with a form of cancer.

Iranian Wrestling Federation President Rasoul Khadem said that Aramideh has "shown great courage and strength" fighting his disease.

Khadem had posted a letter to the President of the UWW, Nenad Lalović, asking him to honour Aramideh with the award.

Online support for Aramideh has also been overwhelming in recent weeks, including a message from London 2012 Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs.

The American posted a photo of Aramideh after he had just claimed his Cadet Championships bronze medal on Instagram.

"Help me send a bunch of love to Iranian cadet and Asian champion Abolfazl Aramideh," Burroughs wrote.

"He has recently began experience issues and needs our support.

"Get well soon Abolfazl!

"Wrestling is one big family regardless of our country or culture."
