Australia’s Rio 2016 double gold medal winning Paralympian Dylan Alcott has been named the GQ Magazine Sportsman of the Year.

At Rio 2016 in September, Alcott won gold in both the wheelchair tennis quad singles and doubles tournaments.

His win alongside Heath Davidson over reigning champions Nick Taylor and David Wagner of the United States was the first Paralympic gold medal won by Australia in the sport since Sydney 2000.

Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe presented the award from the men’s fashion, style and culture magazine to Alcott at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney.

"I started reading GQ when I was 14," Alcott said.

"I dreamt of being in GQ - of course back then I was obese and had no eyebrows.

"Sport really saved my life.

"So I want to thank GQ for having a Paralympian up here.

"We need more people with disabilities in mainstream media and I’m proud of having a disability."

The GQ Sportsman of the Year is just one in a long list of achievements for Alcott this year.

The 25-year-old was also named as the Australian Paralympian of the Year and he will receive his prize - the highest accolade in Paralympic sport in his native country - at the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) Awards on December 8.

Last week Alcott was forced to withdraw from the season ending NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters tournament in London.

The 25-year-old will not play in the International Tennis Federation event at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre due to injury.

The tournament, due to take place from November 30 until December 4, will be staged at the London 2012 Paralympic venue for the third year in a row.

He was due to be the top quads seed in the six-player tournament and has been replaced in the draw by Shraga Weinberg of Israel.

Before wheelchair tennis, Alcott was a member of the Australian wheelchair basketball team which won gold at Beijing 2008.
