Japan's Kenta Matsudaira continued his sublime recent form today at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Swedish Open as he reached the round of 16 at Eriksdalshallen in Stockholm.

Matsudaira overcame Brazil’s Hugo Calderano to win the Austrian Open in Linz last week and he appeared to be in a similar mood today as he thrashed his compatriot Masataka Morizono.

The Japanese star picked up a 11-8, 12-10, 11-8, 11-1 straight games win.

He will now come up against German Benedikt Duda in the next round after he defeated Poland's Wang Zengyi in a seven game thriller.

Duda started well, taking the opening game 11-9, before Wang became increasingly dangerous in taking the second and third games 11-7, 11-9.

The German responded immediately, retaking the lead after winning games four and five 11-8, 11-8.

Refusing to be beaten, Wang once again levelled the match by winning the sixth game 11-9 to take the game into a decider.

It would be Duda who would advance, however, as the experienced German stole victory by winning the seventh game, 11-5.

Meanwhile last week's runner up, Calderano, was eliminated by Liam Pitchford of England.

The Brazilian failed to match his performances last week and he suffered a 11-2, 11-8, 4-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7 defeat.

Elsewhere, there was also action in the women's singles competition today.

The one remaining Swedish player in the draw was knocked out after Matilda Ekholm was beaten by Germany's Han Ying.

Han was ruthless, winning 11-6, 11-2, 11-5, 11-6.

Mima Ito, who won the title at the Austrian Open last week, was also eliminated today.

The Japanese player suffered a shock exit to her compatriot Kyoka Kato who completed a 11-8, 12-10, 3-11, 11-4, 4-11, 12-10 win.

Action is set to continue in Stockholm tomorrow where matches in the men's and women's singles events are due to take place in the round of 16 and quarter-finals.
