Home favourite Boyang Jin claimed the lead in the men's competition after day one of action at the Audi Cup of China, the fourth leg of this year's International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating season.

The 19-year-old, the World Championship bronze medallist in Boston this year, scored a season's best of 96.17 points in the short programme at the Capital Gymnasium in Beijing.

He nailed a quadruple Lutz-triple toeloop combination in the 2022 Winter Olympic host city, as well as a triple Axel and a quadruple toeloop.

"I think I performed better than I do in training right now," said Jin, the Four Continents silver medallist.

"The second jump in the combination was not perfect, but the other jumps were not bad.

"Skate America didn’t go so well for me, so after I came back I worked very hard, because I wanted to do better at the Cup of China."

Daniel Samohin of Israel is currently in silver medal position on 83.47 points before the free skating, with Canada's triple world champion Patrick Chan sitting third on 83.41.

China also lead the pairs event with Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang out in front after the short programme.

Performing to "Eternal Flame" and "Fearless", the duo completed a triple twist, side by side triple toeloop and a throw triple loop to score a personal best of 72.49 points.

"Today we opened the competition in front of our home crowd, which was very exciting and we skated very well," said Zhang.

"We got all level fours, although we still need to practice a lot to perform the programme better.

"Hopefully we’ll perform well tomorrow."

Canadians Liubov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch sit second on 71.28 with another Chinese pair, Cheng Peng and Yang Jin, third on 69.93.

In the women's event, Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond won the short programme, producing a triple flip-triple toe combination, a triple Lutz, a double Axel and level-four spins in her routine for a score of 72.20.

Russia’s Elena Radionova and Japan’s Mai Mihara sit in second and third place, on 70.75 and 68.48 points respectively.

The ice dance leaders are Canada's Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, who recorded a personal best of 73.78 after a routine which included a level four curve lift and a level three partial step sequence.

American brother and sister combination Maia and Alex Shibutani are second on 73.23 with Russians Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin third on 72.09.

Champions in all four disciplines will be crowned in Beijing tomorrow.
