Sochi 2014 gold medallist Evan Strong was among three American victors as the nation made an impressive start to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Snowboard World Cup season in Landgraaf in The Netherlands.

Strong, who won the snowboard cross event at the 2014 Winter Paralympics, topped the podium in the men’s SB-LL2 banked slalom competition, clocking a best time of 31.42sec to finish in front of defending World Cup champion Matti Suur-Hamari of Finland.

American Mike Shea, the reigning world champion in the discipline, did enough for third place.

Mike Minor got the better of Patrick Mayrhofer, the current world champion, in the SB-UL thanks to a time of 33.30, 0.75 quicker than the Austrian.

The duo, who look set to battle it out for the World Cup title this year, were joined on the podium by France’s Maxime Montaggioni.

The success for the United States did not end there as World Championships silver medallist Brenna Huckaby posted the three quickest times on her way to victory in the women’s SB-LL1.

The American’s best effort of 38.86 saw her comfortably oust team-mate Nicole Roundy, while third place went the way of Canada’s Michelle Salt.

Dutch competitors were also in fine form on home snow on the indoor slopes at SnowWorld as Paralympic gold medallist Bibian Mentel-Spee asserted her dominance of the women’s SB-LL2.

The formidable Dutchwoman clocked 36.01, leading from start to finish as she overcame the challenge of compatriot and Lisa Bunschoten, the banked slalom World Cup winner from last season, in the first installment of what is likely to be a thrilling rivalry during the campaign.

Australia’s Joany Badenhorst finished behind the Dutch pair in third.

Home hope Chris Vos, the 18-year-old who is already a world champion in banked slalom and snowboard cross, delivered another win for the hosts in the men’s SB-LL1 classification.

Vos laid down a marker ahead of February’s World Championships in Big White in Canada by posting a quickest run of 35.24.

Second-placed athlete Reinhold Schett of Austria was nearly two seconds adrift, with Mark Mann of the US rounding off the podium in third.

Action continues tomorrow with the second banked slalom races.
