Olympic gold medallists Fiji made an impressive return to competitive action today following their Rio 2016 success at the Oceania Sevens Championships at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

The Fijian team, playing on home soil, won all four of their matches today.

In the seventh match of a busy day of action, the hosts thrashed American Samoa 52-0 before inflicting a 31-12 defeat on Papua New Guinea.

Fiji then brushed aside Tonga 42-19 but saved their best performance until last, as they coasted past Nauru 73-0.

Samoa also enjoyed a sublime start to the competition as they claimed three wins in their three matches today.

The most impressive performance came in their final contest when they overcame Australia 24-5.

Earlier in the day they also got the better of the Solomon Islands and the Cook Islands, winning those clashes 52-0 and 33-5 respectively.

Despite losing to Samoa, Australia still enjoyed three wins in their remaining matches.

They eased past the Solomon Islands 43-0 before beating New Caledonia by an impressive 57-5 scoreline.

In their fourth match of the day, the Cook Islands proved to be a sterner test but Australia managed to narrowly defeat their opponents 12-7.

Meanwhile, there was also action in the women's competition where Australia, winners of the first-ever women’s Olympic rugby sevens gold medal at Rio 2016, fielded a much-changed side.

The selection changes appeared to have had no influence though on Australia's performance as they cruised to a 54-0 win over the Solomon Islands in their first match.

The Olympic champions then made it two wins from two as they defeated Tonga 45-5 before completing a successful day with another win, this time overcoming the Cook Islands 43-0.

Fiji, who were beaten by Great Britain in the quarter finals of the Olympic Games, also enjoyed a dominant day on home soil.

They scored an impressive 118 points while conceding a mere five.

Firstly they thrashed Papua New Guinea 52-0 before inflicting similar damage on Tonga to claim a 38-0 triumph.

Completing Fiji's dominance was a comfortable 28-5 win over Samoa.

The winners of each pool phase will determine the two finalists in both the men's and women's competitions, with action continuing tomorrow.

The tournament aims to provide the competing nations with a key test on the path to the opening World Rugby Sevens Series event of the season, scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 2 and 3.
