Stirling Hinchliffe will remain as the Transport and Commonwealth Games Minister for Gold Coast 2018 after he was backed by Annastacia Palaszczuk, the Premier of Queensland.

The politician has come under fire in recent weeks following a large shortage of drivers on Queensland Rail saw several services delayed and cancelled.

It had been claimed removing the delivery of the Commonwealth Games from his brief would enable Hinchcliffe to focus his attentions on transport in the Australian state.

Hinchcliffe had taken up the post of Transport and Commonwealth Games Minister last December when a reshuffle saw Kate Jones move to becoming Minister for Education and Tourism and Major Events.

With Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson having resigned from her position there had been suggestions Hinchcliffe’s role could change this week but Palaszczuk insisted he would retain his current brief.

"I have given Stirling the task of delivering the Commonwealth Games and transport and that's what Stirling Hinchliffe is doing," Palaszczuk told ABC.

"I don't think it would send a very good message to our other Commonwealth countries or the International Federations if there was a change made to the Commonwealth Games Minister.

"They wouldn't like another change so close out."

It has also been claimed Hinchcliffe’s two key responsibilities for the Commonwealth Games and transport are mutually beneficial for the success of the event.

This comes a day after Gold Coast 2018 revealed their ticket prices for the Commonwealth Games, with those who buy tickets set to receive free public transport on event days.

This would include access to the South East Queensland TransLink transport network, as well as the Cairns TransLink and Townsville qconnect bus networks.

Gold Coast 2018 chairman Peter Beattie has expressed his hope Hinchliffe remains in his current position.

"He's done a really good job on the Commonwealth Games in terms of transport and all other issues and frankly I hope he'll stay - none of my business - but I hope he'll stay," he told ABC.

Hinchcliffe has reportedly worked closely with Gold Coast 2018 on their transport plan for the Games, which are due to be revealed on November 30.
