Among the wrestlers set to compete in Singapore is Wales’ Iwan Baker, who will be contesting the men’s freestyle 61kg competition alongside athletes that competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Baker, the youngest of his country’s contingent at 18 years of age, has had to battle back from two serious injuries to ensure his participation at the Championships.

Having started out this year with a dislocated elbow suffered in training, he made a winning return to action with victory at the Slough Open.

Baker fractured his collarbone though while competing at the English Open in Alfreton in May, leading to another period of rehabilitation and intensive strength and conditioning in order to prove his fitness.

One notable absentee from women’s freestyle competition is India’s Sakshi Malik, who became the first female wrestler from her country to win an Olympic medal at Rio 2016 with bronze in the 58kg category.

She was unable to secure a berth in the Indian team after being forced to pull out of the recently concluded national championships in Uttar Pradesh.

"Due to unavoidable circumstances, I did not participate in the national championship," she told Oneindia News.

"But I have regained fitness almost to the level I belonged before.

"I will require a couple of weeks more to reach my best."
