Ananias Shikongo was named as the winner of three honours at the Namibia Sport Awards following his success at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last month.

Shikongo was presented with the Sport Achiever, Sportsman with a Disability and shared the Team of the Year prize at the ceremony at the Windhoek Country Club.

The latter honour recognised the achievement of the 4x100 metres relay team, who claimed a Paralympic bronze medal at Rio 2016.

He had earned an individual bronze medal in the men’s T11 100m final earlier in the Games, but his crowning achievement came in the 200m event.

Shikongo, who lost his eyesight in both eyes in two separate incidents during his childhood, joined Johanna Benson as Namibia's only gold Paralympic medallist when he won the race in a Paralympic record time of 22.44sec.

The 30-year-old from Okankolo received around NAD$300 000 (£18,000/$22,000/€20,000) for winning three awards.

"It was so good and enjoyable when I defeated those Brazilians in their own country to win these medals," Shikongo said.

"I'm very happy for this achievement.

"Now I can say I am a Namibian hero.

"I've decided that this gold medal and the two bronze medals will be equalised as a gold for the men and a gold for women.

"To encourage the upcoming athletes, sometimes the training is tough but you have to go for it because you have to be a Namibian hero."

Benson, whose best performance at Rio 2016 was finishing sixth in the T37 long jump, received the Sportswoman with Disability Award at the competition.

In September, National Paralympic Committee for Namibia secretary general Mike Hamukwaya claimed the country should increase its funding to its Paralympic athletes by nearly 50 times to help them move closer to achieving their target of finishing in the top 10 countries at Tokyo 2020.
