Five sailors have been elected to World Sailing's Athletes' Commission, the governing body has announced.

The quintet will take up their roles following a vote by sailors who competed at the Rio 2016 Olympic regatta.

Jo Aleh of New Zealand, Greece's Sofia Bekatorou, Israel's Maayan Davidovich, Juan Ignacio Maegli of Guatemala and Slovenia's Vasiliij Zbogar each received the backing of their peers.

They will join three existing members in Britain's Sarah Gosling, China's Lijia Xu and Yann Rocherieux of France, with the latter now serving as chair.

The incoming members will serve eight-year terms through to 2024, with the existing trio coming to the end of their spells in 2020.

Aleh won Olympic gold at London 2012 in the women's 470 class with Polly Powrie, before adding silver at Rio 2016 in August.

Bekatorou is also an Olympic gold medallist after winning the 470 title with Aimilia Tsoulfa on home water at Athens 2004.

She then added bronze in the yngling class four years later at Beijing 2008, and has won the prestigious Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award twice.

At Rio 2016, she was the Greek flagbearer.

Davidovich is a two-time Olympian and has won multiple RS:X medals at World Championship and Sailing World Cup level, while Zbogar boasts two Olympic silver medals and one bronze from the laser and finn classes.

Maegli was elected by World Sailing President Carlo Croce, as is allowed through the World Sailing regulations.

The Guatemalan is a two-time laser Olympian and is the 2015 Pan American Games gold medallist.

The Athletes' Commission reports directly to the World Sailing Board of Directors, with Rocherieux a permanent voting member of the Board as chair.

The body represents the interests of Olympic sailors, and encourages open communication and feedback.

Bekatorou will serve as vice chair.
