Cape Verde will reportedly play host to a secretary generals seminar of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) next October.

According to the national Inforpress news agency, the National Olympic Committee of Cape Verde (COC) were awarded the annual event last week.

They were reportedly chosen ahead of rival bids from Tanzania and Ethiopia.

COC President Filomena Fortes claims the event is a major coup for the nation and a key step towards eventually being awarded hosting rights for the African Beach Games.

"This is one of the biggest events [organised] by the ANOCA," she said.

The meeting, in which secretary generals from across African NOCs should participate, is expected to take place in October 2017.

It will follow a 2016 edition in the fellow Portuguese-speaking island nation of São Tome and Principe held earlier this month.

Sal, one of 10 islands which make up the Atlantic archipelago, is due to host the forum.

Cape Verde has sent athletes to every Summer Olympic Games held since 1996, although they have never won an Olympic medal.

A five-strong team competed in the sports of athletics, boxing, rhythmic gymnastics and taekwondo at Rio 2016.
