Posito Martinez was crowned the men's freestyle world champion on the penultimate day of action at the 2016 International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) World Championships in Porto Pollo.

Once again the weather was ideal for competition today as blue skies covered the Sardinian coast and the wind speeds provided perfect conditions for kiteboarding.

All of the finals had been completed yesterday meaning today was used to complete the heats for the lower rankings, as well as crown the men's world freestyle champion.

Martinez of the Dominican Republic was still in contention for the overall title but needed to win two heats to secure a fifth-place finish that would guarantee himself the world crown.

Martinez's defeat in the main competition yesterday was the shock of the tournament so far as he joined his compatriot Ariel Corniel in being eliminated early on.

In his first heat today, however, Martinez faced his compatriot Joselito Del Rosario.

Martinez managed to easily advance as his performance earned a total of 28.55 points, while Del Rosario produced a score of 6.24.

Martinez then faced Italian Francesco Contini as his hopes of a world title increased.

The contest had the crowd on the edge of their seats as it looked like the pressure had overcome Martinez as he failed to land some of his easiest tricks.

With only 10 seconds left, Contini was still in the lead with Martinez only scoring four out of a possible five tricks.

With only five seconds to go Martinez managed to pull off a superbly executed manoeuvre to send him into the lead.

Martinez won heat with a total of 28 points to Contini's 25.05 and secure fifth place, enough to win the men's freestyle World Championship title.

Tomorrow is due to the last day of the competition period in Sardinia and will conclude with the awards ceremony.
