Germany's two-time defending champion Dimitrij Ovtcharov crashed out of the men's singles competition to Polish youngster Jakub Dyjas at the European Table Tennis Championships in Budapest today.

Ovtcharov, the number one seed and Baku 2015 European Games champion, was beaten 4-2 by Dyjas, Europe's top ranked under 21 player.

Defending mixed doubles champions Aleksandar Karakasevic and Ruta Paskauskiene also exited at the semi-finals stage in Budapest today.

The Serbian-Lithuanian duo, who won the last time the mixed event features on the continental programme in 2007, were beaten in four sets by Swedish pair Mattias Karlsson and Matilda Ekholm.

The duo subsequently lost to husband and wife Joao Monteiro and Daniela Dodean Monteiro in the final.

The Portuguese and Romanian couple won a thrilling encounter 14-12 in the fifth.

Shock of the day so far in the second round in the singles action came in the women's event where fourth seed Liu Jia of Austria was knocked-out in five sets by Kristin Silbereisen of Germany.

Five Germans made it through to the last 16 to partially amend for the men's singles disappointment.

Top-ranked Han Ying overcame Portugal's Sheo Jieni 4-1, while second seed Petrissa Solja won four straight over Barbora Balazova of Slovakia.

Sabine Winter also beat Russia's Yana Noskova 4-1, as Xiaona Shan won 4-0 over Yulia Prokhorova.

Hungary's Georgina Pota was among others to progress, delighting the home crowd with a straightforward 4-0 win over Romanian Irina Ciobanu.
