The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) have hailed "lively discussions" at their inaugural five-day coaching seminar in Seoul.

Attended by 30 coaches from some of the world’s most successful taekwondo nations, the seminar is aimed at helping to share "international best practice" in taekwondo coaching.

It also allows the attendees to provide feedback on WTF policy and the direction of the sport.

"These are superstar coaches - [including] the Iranian who made today’s Iranian taekwondo," said Jin-bang Yang, WTF director general.

"The French coach who is the chairperson of the Coaching Committee and a symbol of female leadership in taekwondo.

"And we also have some coaches from small countries with strong teams - like Belgium and Serbia - to ask them about their recipes for success.

"The big purpose is that the WTF has been trying to establish new coach education programmes and certification programmes for so long but it has never succeeded.

"We tried a couple of times a long time ago.

"At this time, the WTF is trying to set up coach certification programmes from the grassroots level to the very top, so this is the starting programme, top-down, not bottom-up."

Coaches have been discussing their desirable changes to the sport with the WTF Technical Committee, with key discussions surrounding competition rules, systems, the image of the game and the protector and scoring system (PSS).

The attendees also presented to each other on issues surrounding training centre establishment and management and talent scouting programmes, as well on coaching philosophies and teaching strategies for different categories of players.

WTF President Chungwon Choue also held a question and answer session, where he expressed his hope that the sport will continue to innovate.

"We have to innovate rules and regulations and the PSS and everything, I really want to make our sport one of the most interesting and dynamic - and of course fair and transparent," said Choue.

"That is what we are going to do from now on, so this workshop and forums are very important."

Following the completion of the seminar, due to take place until tomorrow, the WTF Technical Committee will present proposed changes to the governing body’s executives.

Should the Committee and the WTF executives agree on the changes, they will be put to a vote at the WTF General Assembly in Burnaby in Canada next month, which will take place alongside the World Taekwondo Junior Championships.

Changes which are approved will then be applied at WTF Championships from 2017.
