Britain’s two-time Olympic medal-winning taekwondo player Lutalo Muhammad has returned to his place of birth in the London borough of Walthamstow to open a new £26 million ($32 million/€29 million) leisure complex.

Muhammad, who was just one second away from winning gold at Rio 2016, used to go to the old version of the Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre as a teenager.

"I’m fortunate enough to train in a world-class facility for my job [GB Taekwondo's National Taekwondo Centre in Manchester], but I come here and see some of the same things," he told the Epping Forest Guardian

"I’m extremely jealous of any young child who is into sport in Walthamstow right now because they have access to this amazing facility.

"Even if they don’t have Olympic aspirations like I did, if you’re just into sport there’s no better place."

Among the facilities at the Centre are 9.9 metre climbing walls, an adventure zone set across four levels, a three-tiered play kingdom for children under five and a mini-trampoline park.

It also features a 25-metre, eight-lane competition swimming pool as well as a teaching pool, a four-court sports hall, two studios overlooking the track, a new 132-station gym and changing facilities.

A new floodlit artificial sports pitch and a revamped track and field facility are located outside the Centre and have been brought up to national competition standard for the first time in decades.

Muhammad lost against Ivory Coast’s Cheick Sallah Cissé in the under-80 kilograms final at Rio 2016.

Trailing 6-4 in the dying seconds of the contest, the Ivorian connected with a spinning head-kick for four points before sprinting straight off the mat and on an impromptu lap of honour.

Four years ago, ahead of London 2012, Muhammad was controversially selected ahead of Aaron Cook - regarded as the world number one at the time - but still went on to claim the bronze medal in the under 80kg division.

Muhammad - nicknamed the Walthamstow Warrior - received hate mail when selected ahead of Cook, who switched allegiance to Moldova as a result of the "snub".
