France's Maxime Livio delighted his home crowd by winning the Les 4 Etoiles de Pau competition, the opening event of the 2016-17 International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Classics season.

Livio produced a stunning, penalty-free performance in the show jumping today on Qalao Des Mers to finish on a total score of 45.3 for the weekend, which was good enough to secure the maximum 15 points from the event.

"I’ve finished second at this level before, so finally to win is very special," said Livio.

"I’ve had a marvellous time at Pau - the ground was well prepared, the courses were great and my horse performed well."

Germany's Rio 2016 three-day eventing Olympic champion Michael Jung finished in both second and third places aboard two different horses.

Overnight, Jung sat in both first and fourth position in the overall standings after Friday's (October 14) dressage competition and yesterday's cross-country event.

The German's performance today on Fischer Takinou earned him four penalties giving him a total of 52.1, which allowed Livio to sneak ahead.

His run atop Fischer Rocana produced eight penalties, taking his total with this horse to 52.2.

Jung received 12 points for his overall performance.

Ireland's Camilla Speirs was delighted with her Rio 2016 partner Portersize Just A Jiff as the pair rose from 32nd after the opening day's dressage to take sixth place with a double clear round in the cross-country and jumping phases, giving them a total of 55.7.

A total of 56 pushed New Zealand’s Jock Paget into seventh after he picked up eight jumping faults with Clifton Signature, while Wilson filled a second top-10 spot with Annie Clover in eighth with a score of 56.1.

Tina Cook of Britain finished in ninth with a score of 56.3 whilst Karim Florent Laghouag of France rounded off the top ten with 56.5.

The second event of the FEI Classics competition is the Australian International Three Day Event in Adelaide which begins on November 3.
