The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has confirmed the members of its newly elected Athletes' Committee, which includes ten representatives from nine countries.

Five men and five women will serve on the Committee, with the number including three Para-triathletes.

Athletes had until midnight on September 11 to nominate candidates for the positions, with voting then beginning online.

Returning to the Committee to serve another term are Olympians Ai Ueda of Japan and France's Jessica Harrison, as well as Paralympian Clare Cunningham of Britain.

The women's representatives are completed by Rachel Klamer of The Netherlands and Sweden's Lisa Norden.

The male athletes on the Committee include Para-triathletes Yannick Bourseaux of France and Austria's Jonathan Goerlach.

Shen-Yen Hsieh of Chinese Taipei and Mexican Francisco Serrano were also elected, while Tamas Toth of Hungary completes the list.

The role of athletes in the decision-making process of the ITU has been a "fundamental principle" of the world governing body since its creation in Avignon in France in 1989, the governing body claims.

Responsibilities include attending the ITU’s Annual Congress, where the Athletes’ Committee has two votes, as well as obtaining and synthesising views of athletes on a range of matters relevant to them.

The inclusion of elected athletes on the ITU Executive Board is said to have strengthened the role of the athletes.

It is also part of the ITU’s bid to be athlete-centered.

"Athletes have been an integral part of the decision-making process since the ITU was founded nearly 30 years ago," said ITU President and International Olympic Committee member Marisol Casado.

"I’m very pleased to see a diverse range of athletes on the Committee, with a wide breadth of experience.

"I look forward to working with them to make triathlon even better."
