Evdokimova and Klimenkova went head-to-head in an intriguing contest and both fencers started well at the Pagecentrum in Stadskanaal in The Netherlands.

Evdokimova eventually proved too strong, however, as she pulled away from her opponent with a series of well-timed attacks to earn a 15-8 triumph.

She was earlier pushed all the way in her semi-final with Georgia’s Nino Tibiashvili as she emerged victorious in an extra period after the match had finished all square at 12-12.

Tibiashvili and Russian Irina Mishurova, who lost 15-12 to Klimenkova in the last four, both ended the event on a high as each took home a bronze medal.

In the other category to take place on day three, Emanuele Lambertini of Italy was denied a hat-trick of titles in Stadskanaal as he was beaten in the final of the men’s under-23 foil tournament by Maxim Shaburov of Russia.

Shaburov and Lambertini both looked in good form throughout the pool stages and produced a fascinating battle in the gold medal bout.

The two traded scoring blows on a regular basis until the Russian began to take control as he closed out a 15-10 victory.

Lambertini had been struggling early on and a change of weapon sparked his comeback into life, but it ended up being too little, too late as he was forced to settle for silver.

Bronze medals in the category went the way of Turkey’s Hakkan Akkaya and Vadim Shcherbakov of Russia.

The event is due to conclude tomorrow with the men’s under-23 épée tournament and the women’s under-23 foil competition.

A total of 60 athletes from around the world have gathered for the competition, the highest number of competitors to ever attend a Junior World Championships.
