Asian Games bronze medallist Hsu Jen-hao delighted the home crowd as he progressed to the semi-final of the men’s singles event at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Chinese Taipei Masters at the Hsing Chuang Gymnasium today in Tapei today.

The top seed was made to work hard for his place in the last four, however, as he battled to a five-game triumph over Chun Seang Tan of Malaysia.

Hsu, third at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, lost the opening game and then fell 2-1 behind before recovering to win 6-11, 11-4, 13-15,11-5, 11-9.

The unseeded Malaysian was just one away from springing a surprise but ultimately the pressure told as he could not convert a glorious opportunity to prolong his stay in the competition.

India’s Sourabh Varma awaits for Hsu in the semi-finals after he beat Kento Horiuchi of Japan 7-11, 11-1, 11-3, 11-7.

Home representation in the other last-four contest tomorrow was guaranteed as fifth seed Lin Yu-hsien overcame compatriot Hsueh Hsuan-yi 11-6, 6-11, 11-6, 11-6.

Lin’s next opponent will be Malaysia’s Daren Liew, who defeated Indonesia’s Shesar Hir Rhustavito 11-8, 11-3, 11-2.

In the women’s singles, Japan’s Ayumi Mine, the third seed and the highest ranked player left in the draw, safely reached the semi-finals with a 11-9, 11-8, 11-9 victory against Lee Chia-Hsin of Chinese Taipei.

Pornpawee Chochuwong stands between Mine and a place in the final after the Thai player, seeded fifth, knocked out Jing Yi Tee of Malaysia, the second seed, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6.

There was a shock in one of the other quarter-finals as unseeded Japanese Saena Kawakami ended the title challenge of sixth seed Hana Ramadhini of Indonesia with a 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, 8-11, 14-12 success.

Kawakami’s reward is a meeting with team-mate Asuka Takahashi after she beat compatriot Yukino Nakai 11-8, 13-11, 11-9.
