Fiji, the home of the Rio 2016 Olympic champions, has been announced as the host venue for the 2016 Oceania Rugby Sevens Championships.

The tournament is set to take place at the ANZ Stadium in Suva on November 11 and 12.

It is the first time that the tournament will fully combine both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

The tournament has been described as "the perfect build up to the start of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series that opens in Dubai in early December".

Recently crowned men’s Olympic gold medallists and current World Rugby HSBC Sevens champion Fiji will be competing for the first time since their win at Rio 2016. 

Australia, the women’s Olympic gold medallists and current HSBC Sevens Champions, will be among the favourites in their respective event.

The men’s competition will comprise of 10 teams playing in two-round robin pools with those at the top of the standings progressing to the final stages.

Seven teams will compete in the women’s tournament, playing in one round robin pool with the team at the top of the standings at the conclusion of play declared the winner.

"The Fiji Rugby Union is excited the Oceania Rugby Sevens Championships will be able to host the history-making Olympic gold medallists Fiji," said Fiji Rugby Union chief executive John O’Connor.

"It is special that Fijian rugby fans can see them in action at home in their first outing since the Olympic Games.

"I am sure the team will also be excited to play in front of their home fans."

The tournament will also serve as a qualifier for non-core HSBC Sevens events, in Wellington, Sydney and Hong Kong as part of the men's 2017 Sevens Series.

"his tournament is key to the ongoing development of Sevens Rugby within the region," said Oceania Rugby general manager Cheryl McCormack.

"The continued, outstanding performances of our teams from the region in international events reflects the quality and strength of Oceania Rugby competitions such as these Championships."
