Top seed Hsu Jen Hao delighted the home crowd at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Chinese Taipei Masters after coming from behind against Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu to book his place in round three of the men’s singles draw.

The 24-year-old appeared to be in trouble at the Hsing Chuang Gymnasium in Taiwan’s capital Taipei, but he managed to regain his composure and register a 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 victory over his opponent.

Next up for Hsu is compatriot Teng Shih Hua, who beat fellow countryman Kuo Ching-Hung 11-8, 11-7, 2-11, 11-9.

The biggest shock in the men’s singles draw saw second seed Sameer Verma of India suffer a 10-12, 11-6, 3-11, 4-11 defeat at the hands of home favourite Chia Hung Lu.

In the women’s singles, top seed Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei was forced to retire from her encounter with Japan’s Moe Araki when trailing 4-2 in the first game.

Araki now faces a second-round encounter with compatriot Yukino Nakai, an 11-7, 11-6, 11-8 winner against Malaysia’s Soniia Cheah.

Second seed Jing Yi Tee will fancy her chances of going all the way despite having had to come through a five-game epic with Chinese Taipei’s Lin Hsiang Ti, triumphing 9-11, 15-13, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5.

The seeded pairings in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles all received first-round byes, however, the top four men’s doubles duos were all in action today.

Top seeds Chen Hung Ling and Chi-Lin Wang of Chinese Taipei comfortably overcame Hong Kong’s Tam Chun Hei and Ho Wai Lun 11-9, 11-9, 13-11.

The only seeds to be eliminated were second-ranked Or Chin Chung and Tang Chun Man of Hong Kong as they let a two-game lead slip to lose 11-9, 11-7, 5-11, 9-11, 9-11 against Chinese Taipei’s Hung Ying Yuan and Lin Chia Hao.

Action also continued today at the Dutch Open, which is taking place at the Topsportcentrum in Almere.

Men’s singles top seed Ajay Jayaram of India beat Finland’s Henri Aarnio 21-16, 21-11 in the first round before defeating Bulgaria’s Philip Shishov 21-7, 21-9. 

The United States’ Zhang Beiwen leads the field in the women’s singles and started with a 21-12, 21-16 win over Germany’s Yvonne Li.
