Six-time Olympic medallist Kim Rhode claimed the skeet title as the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup Final began in Rome today.

The 37-year-old American, a triple gold medallist at the Games who won skeet bronze at August's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, registered a perfect score of 16 hits in the gold medal match.

That meant China's Wei Meng had to settle for silver with a tally of 15 after also losing the Rio bronze medal clash to the US shooter.

Rhode had earlier progressed from the semi-final stage with 14 hits out of 16 shots, making it through via a three-way shoot-off.

Bronze today went to Thailand's Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit, won won 15-14 against Italy's Rio Olympic champion Diana Bacosi.

"It was an incredible experience," said Rhode, who also won at the ISSF World Cup Final title in 2011. 

"We had some fantastic competitors out there, a lot of experience on the line.

"I am just very happy to be able to compete against them, and do as well as I did. 

"I am very thankful for the day.

"There’s a lot of sacrifice. 

"Motivation comes from the people, and the competition. 

"I really love being in that moment, out there, on the field, down to the last target. 

"Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t, but it’s really about the journey.

"Right now, at the end of this season, I want to dedicate some time to my son and my family."  

In the men's double trap final, Australia's James Willett beat Jeffrey Holguin of the US to gold, 28-27.

The bronze medal was won by Malta's William Chetcuti, who saw off Andreas Loew, 29-24.
