Dave King will serve as head coach of the men's Canadian ice hockey team at the 2016 Deutschland Cup, it has been announced.

The 68-year-old is no stranger to the international arena, and coached his country to an Olympic silver medal at Albertville in 1992.

He was also in charge at the 1984 and 1988 Winter Games and steered his charges to a bronze medal at the 1982 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship.

King, a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame, has coached in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets.

He was most recently in charge of Russian side Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Mike Pelino, Luke Richardson and Mike Stewart will serve as assistant coaches for the Deutschland Cup, a four-team tournament which will be staged by Germany for the 27th time between November 4 and 6.

Canada will play the hosts, Slovakia and Switzerland in a round-robin format having won the competition on four occasions.

They will field players who are based in Europe as part of the search for new talent.

"Dave has a long and rich history coaching our national men’s team in a variety of tournaments and competitions, and it’s great to have him back with Team Canada," said Hockey Canada's Sean Burke.

"Mike Pelino and Mike Stewart have held coaching roles for us in past Deutschland Cup appearances, and bring an active understanding of the players we’ll be tapping into and playing against.

"And it’s always great to bring in former Team Canada players who have moved into coaching; we think this will be a great experience for Luke, and he’ll add a lot to our staff."
