Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú will once again be the star attraction when the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup continues tomorrow with the opening day of the sixth leg at the Hamad Aquatic Centre in Doha.

The Iron Lady, who won three gold medals and one silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, arrives in Qatar’s capital having dominated the first five legs of the series in Paris-Chartres, Berlin, Moscow, Beijing and Dubai.

She returns to the venue of the 2014 FINA Swimming World Short Course Championships, where she broke four world records on her way to claiming titles in the 100 metres backstroke, 200m backstroke, 100m individual medley and 200m individual medley.

"I am very happy with my performance in the Rio 2016 Olympics," Hosszú, the overall winner of the FINA Swimming World Cup since 2012, told Gulf Times.

"I worked very hard since London 2012 to be in a good place for the next Games and I think we achieved that.

"I’m very excited to get right back to competing, especially in Doha, where it always feels like home."

A total of 13 Rio 2016 medallists and four world record holders are due to compete at the two-day event.

Among them are Japan’s Rie Kaneto, who won the 200m breaststroke, Brittany Elmslie, who helped Australia win the 4x100m freestyle relay, and Katie Meili who was part of the United States’ podium-topping team in the 4x100m medley relay and won individual bronze in the 100m breaststroke.

In the men’s competition, Rio 2016 silver medallist Chad le Clos is one of the stand-out names.

The South African finished as the runner-up in the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Currently leading the men’s rankings is Russia’s Vladimir Morozov who has already broken the world record twice this year in the 100m individual medley and will be hoping to maintain his advantage in Doha.

"We are pleased to welcome so many Rio 2016 Olympic medallists to Doha for our fifth consecutive FINA Swimming World Cup, ensuring that it promises to be one of the most exciting World Cups that we have hosted to date," said Khalil al-Jabir, President of the Qatar Swimming Association.

"This world-class line-up is testament to our dedication to swimming and our track-record in hosting excellent swimming events at Hamad Aquatic Centre.

"We encourage everyone not to miss out on the opportunity to witness this incredible competition taking place on their doorstep and to get their tickets now."
