World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President Chungwon Choue has targeted further poomsae taekwondo events around the world following the successful tenth edition of the World Championships in Peru's capital Lima.

The action came to a close on Sunday (October 2) with the First Lady of Peru, Nancy Lange Kuczynski, attending the final day of action.

A total of 55 countries and 760 athletes took part in this year’s Championships in all - a record for the event - with South Korea topping the medals table.

The WTF were keen to point to the rapid global growth in popularity of the taekwondo discipline ahead of the tournament.

Turkey finished second on the medals table, with the United States completing the top three.

The Championships were the first to be held with the poomsae world ranking bylaws applied, following their introduction in June.

Choue claimed the world rankings are part of the ongoing commitment to "professionalising" the discipline and he believes the World Championships have highlighted the popularity of poomsae taekwondo.

Currently not on the Olympic programme, poomsae is a non-sparring event where individuals or teams perform a "sequence of movements arranged in a meaningful order in response to attacks from multiple imaginary assailants".

Choue has stated his desire to see poomsae on the programme of larger sporting events in the near future, after it was accepted for the Asian Games.

"It was an honour to welcome the First Lady of Peru to our Poomsae Championships in Lima," said Choue.

"After the triumph of this year’s Championships I hope that poomsae will be included on the sports programme for the Pan American Games, just as it has been for the 2018 edition of the Asian Games.

"We have ambitions for poomsae to be part of the European Games and the All Africa Games in the future and we are continuing to work tirelessly to raise the sport’s profile in general."

During her visit, Kuczynski met with teams from different countries and had the opportunity to present a silver medal to Peruvian athlete Marcela Castillo Tokumori in the female individual under-30 division.

The First Lady also met with Choue to discuss the popularity of taekwondo throughout Peru.

In the meeting she praised the country's governing body for organising a successful Championships.
