A delegation from the Budapest 2024 sustainability team embarked on a visit to London in an attempt to learn lessons they hope will improve their bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Led by Pál Baross, the chairman of the Budapest 2024 Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB), the group went to a number of the venues used for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the Lee Valley VeloPark.

They also met with representatives of the Building Research Establishment and the Royal Institute of British Architects as they continue to gather ideas and information for their attempt at securing the hosting rights for the Olympics and Paralympics in eight years’ time.

Following the trip to the 2012 host city, Baross praised London for its "great track record for sustainability" and vowed to make sure sustainability continues to be at the heart of Budapest’s bid.

"We will ensure that sustainability is placed at the centre of the transformative legacies of Budapest 2024," he said.

"Our Games Bid offers a unique opportunity to accelerate the journey towards an even more sustainable future for Budapest, our six additional Olympic cities and Hungary as a nation.

"London 2012 has a great track record for sustainability, for example in its zero waste to landfill policy, carbon emissions and use of recycled materials, and it is right on Europe’s doorstep.

"By absorbing and applying the successes and mistakes of our peers, we can improve and fast track our own strategies.

"Ultimately, we aim to inspire the region with Hungarian initiatives, such as the Budapest Water Summit coming up in November."

The Budapest 2024 SAB, which was established in June and meets on a monthly basis, includes members from a range of sectors, such as Government, academia and non-Governmental organisations.

The SAB will "will help to ensure that the Budapest Bid’s plans and policies comply with the latest technology, environmental regulations and sustainability best practices in fields such as construction, renewable energy, air and water quality, transparency, transportation", according to Budapest 2024.

They will also have a "legacy impact by embedding these practices for the long term use of the facilities", the Bid Committee claim.

Budapest is up against Los Angeles, Paris and Rome, although the Italian capital’s bid appears doomed after Mayor Virginia Raggi refused to give her crucial backing last week, for the right to stage the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.

The International Olympic Committee will elect its chosen host at the 130th Session in Lima on September 13 next year.
