Hosts Vietnam won four gold medals here today as Asian Beach Games action intensified in 11 different sports.

An early morning storm aside, the day was far dryer than the torrential downpours which overshadowed the Opening Ceremony last night.

It was a day for non-Olympic sports as ju jitsu, kurash and woodball shared the medals limelight with marathon swimming.

Iraq also won gold ju jitsu, with Amir Yahya Abdulamir Albazy defeating Gian Taylor Dee of Philippines in the under 62kg affair.

The war-torn nation nearly won a third title when Ali Ahmed Dabah Alalabd was narrowly beaten by the United Arab Emirates' Talid Alkribi at under 69kg.

Faisal Alketbi then claimed a second UAE gold medal with under 94kg victory over Basel Emir Spir Fanous of Jordan.

Vietnam secured gold in the women's show system duo final before To Thi Trang added women's under 49kg silver after losing to Thailand's Varaporn Poorisrisak.

Vietnam also won two more martial arts gold medals in kurash.

Hoang Thi Tinh first beat Van Ngoc Tu in the women's under 48kg event before Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy overcame Nguyen Thi Quynh in a second all-host nation final in the under 52kg division.

A third Vietnam 1-2 followed in woodball - a variant of croquet in which a ball is hit through gates using a mallet - when Phan Thi Phuong finished first in the women's fairway competition ahead of Nguyen Huyen Trang.

Kazakhstan's Vitaliy Khudyakov is emerging as one of the early stars of the Games as he added the five kilometres marathon swimming title to the 10km event he had already won.

He clocked 58min 03.03sec to win by seven seconds from Saleh Mohammad of Syria.

Xin Xin beat Yang Dandan in a Chinese 1-2 in the women's 10km final.

Action also began or continued today in the seven other sports of handball, kabaddi, petanque, sepak takraw, soccer, volleyball and muay thai.
