Croatia's Tonči Stipanović added a Sailing World Cup gold medal to his Olympic Games silver from RIo 2016 with a steady and calm performance in the final laser race in Qingdao in China.

Stipanović knew that the medal was all but secure and only needed to worry about Britain's Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini as the event concluded.

The Croatian finished in fifth today but, with Chiavarini behind him in seventh, the gold medal was his as he finished on 25 points.

The winner of the medal race, Cyprus' Pavlos Kontides, leap-frogged Chiavarini into silver medal position on 34 points with Italy's Giovanni Coccoluto taking bronze with a total of 40 as he too outperformed Chiavarini in the medal race, coming third.

China's Dongshuang Zhang, in ominous form throughout the regatta in the laser radial event, secured her gold medal with a third place finish in the medal race giving her a competition total of 13 points.

Finland's Monika Mikkola finished in fourth which was enough to guarantee her the silver medal with a total of 27 points.

A disqualification for China's Rubei Yuan in the medal race gave Malaysia's Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif the chance to sneak onto the podium.

Latif needed to win but could only manage a second, with first place going to Finland's Erica Partanen to give bronze to Yuan by just one point.

Chunzhuang Liu of China knew that if he won the men's RS:X medal race the gold medal was his and he duly delivered.

Liu started the World Cup well with three wins from four races, but from there began to falter and gave his opponents the chance to cut his lead.

He returned to form today though and secured the gold medal with 35 points.

China's Bing Ye took silver with 40 points and Mengfan Gao secured an all Chinese podium with a third in the medal race and 42 points overall.

In the women's RS:X event, China's Hongmei Shi guaranteed gold yesterday, meaning the focus was on the silver medal.

China's Jiao Ma won that battle over compatriot Xiaoqing Yu.

Ma placed second in the medal race while Yu was down in seventh.

The difference in final race placements meant the two Chinese windsurfers were tied on 54 points.

Ma claimed the silver medal, however, thanks to her superior final race finish.

There was a gold medal in the men's 470 for Chinese duo Hao Lan and Chao Wang.

The pair finished with a total of 30 points, eight ahead of second placed compatriots Liangdao Weng and Youjian Wen.

Weng and Wen only just scraped into silver medal position, however, as third placed Zangjun Xu and Wei Wang, also of China, won the medal race to leave them with 40 points.

Another Chinese duo, Mengxi Wei and Yani Xu, meanwhile narrowly won the women's 470 gold medal.

Silver medallists Shasha Chen and Haiyan Gao finished the last race in first which piled the pressure on Wei and Xu.

They had to take second place to triumph, which they duly did to finish on 17 points for the week with Chen and Gao just behind on 19 points.

China's Shengnan Ni and Lizhu Huang crossed just behind in third place and with that claimed third overall and a bronze medal.

Lei Gong of China lost Finn gold despite dominating the competition throughout the regatta.

Not finishing lower than second all week, Gong was cruising to the gold medal until the medal race.

In his lowest finish all week, Gong finished in fourth position to let his nearest rival, team-mate He Chen, snatch the gold medal rom under his nose.

Chen won the final race which gave him just enough to overtake Gong, winning by one point.

He was top with 16 points with Gong on 17 points, while another Chinese athlete, Xin Li, took bronze with 21.

The Sailing World Cup is due to move on to the showpiece finale in Melbourne in Australia in December.
