GB Boxing have held their “biggest-ever” female emerging talent camp on the back of Nicola Adams successfully defending her gold medal at last month’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The three-day event attracted more than 30 participants, taken from the best boxers from three home nations – England, Scotland and Wales - across junior, youth and senior categories.

The governing body said it “showed the athletes the dedication that must go into their training and gave them the opportunity to work with world class coaches”.

The camps, launched in 2013 as part of the world-class programme, are designed to give promising competitors in the sport a taste of what it would be like should they continue on the pathway to potentially representing their country in the future.

“This edition of the emerging talent programme provided an opportunity for the best female boxers in the country to come together and train at the world class facility,” GB performance pathway manager Rob Gibson said.

“It provided the GB Boxing coaches the chance to observe and provide feedback to this aspiring squad.

“With the Rio Olympics finished, the focus is very much on Tokyo 2020 and by the looks of it, a very bright future, with the talent and dedication these boxers possess.

“I would like to thank all those boxers who attended and the coaches who supported the camp.

“Well done to all.”

The event was held following Rio 2016, where Adams became a double Olympic gold medallist by winning her second straight title in the women’s flyweight category with victory over Sarah Ourahmoune of France in the final.

“It was a great camp, it was a wonderful opportunity for the boxers from England, Scotland and Wales to train together,” GB Boxing coach Mark Geraghty added.

“The camp was a huge success and it gave the coaches the opportunity to have a look at the talent coming through the home nations.”
