Three-time Olympic wrestling champion Saori Yoshida of Japan could juggle competing for her country at their home Olympic Games at Tokyo 2020 with coaching the other members of the national women's team, it has been reported.

Yoshida, winner of the Olympic gold medal in the 55 kilograms freestyle category at three successive Games from Athens 2004 to London 2012 but was denied a fourth title in a row at Rio 2016 following defeat to American Helen Maroulis, may be tasking with leading her side at the event in the Japanese capital, according to Kyodo News.

The 33-year-old, one of the leading names in the sport, is expected to bid to attempt to wrestle back her Olympic crown in four years' time.

She has previously expressed a desire to take part at the Olympics on home soil, the first to be held in Tokyo since 1964.

Her potential appointment as coach is set to be formally decided at a Board of Directors meeting of the Japan Wrestling Federation on September 26.

" want to decide my path while coaching," she told Kyodo News

Yoshida competed in the 53kg freestyle event at Rio but was unable to add to her collection of Olympic gold medals as she was forced to settle for silver after losing out to Maroulis in the final.

It was the first time in 14 years that she had not finished on top of the medals podium after winning three Olympic gold medals and 13 World Championship titles.

Yoshida was aiming to become only the second woman ever to win four Olympic gold medals in a single event in four Summer Games.

She was also aiming to be only the second wrestler to win four Olympic golds after compatriot Kaori Icho achieved the feat by winning the 58kg crown.
