American Kurt McHenry produced a fine display as he beat European champion Mahir Mammadazada of Azerbaijan to secure the gold medal in the men's 42 kilograms freestyle competition at the Cadet Wrestling World Championships in Tbilisi.

McHenry knew he had his work cut out if he was to overcome the powerful Azeri but he performed when it mattered, battling to a 7-5 triumph to seal top spot on the podium.

Russia's Magomed Abdurakhmanov took the first bronze on offer with victory over Seyed Ali Seyedyahya Azimisiyacheghaei of Iran and the other went to Giorgi Gegelashvili of Georgia, who defated Kyrgyzstan's Abdymalik Karachov by technical fall.

The United States were denied a second title on the penultimate day of action in the Georgian capital as Vitali Arujau lost to Iranian Amirhossein Azim Maghsoudi, who earned a 12-8 triumph in a high-scoring men's freestyle 58kg category.

Azerbaijan bounced back from their earlier disappointment as Abubakr Abakarov prevented another Iranian victory by edging Sajjad Saberali Gholami 6-3 in the 69kg gold medal match-up.

David Aaron Carr added to the American haul with a bronze medal as he proved too strong for Gegham Galstyan of Armenia.

The duo prevailed over Jakub Szymula of Poland and Mher Markosyan of Armenia.
