Russia celebrated relay gold for the second successive day at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) Junior World Championships in Cairo.

Their men’s pairing of Serge Baranov and Alexander Lifanov began the day hoping to replicate the achievement of their team-mates Alena Popova and Sofia Serkina.

After winning the fencing event and a strong third place in the swimming, the Russian team topped the overall standings ahead of South Korea’s Lee Jihun and Jun Woongtae.

Both pairings struggled in the riding event, but the Russian team extended their advantage over their nearest rivals, which took them to the brink of victory heading into the combined discipline.

Baranov and Lifanov rubber stamped their triumph after producing the second quickest time in the combined event by finishing in 11min 11.16sec, giving them a final score of 1,526 points.

South Korea held onto their second place in the standings by ending on a score of 1,509 points, while Italy completed the podium by finishing on 1,495.

The Italian medal disappointed the home crowd in Cairo, with Egypt finishing in fourth place having accrued 1,482 points during the competition.

"We are very happy with the way the competition is unfolding with these young athletes from several different nations gathering for competition, for glory but also for joy," said Sherif El-Erian, Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation President.

"We can see that everything is running very smoothly and I am sure we will maintain this good atmosphere for the coming days in the individuals and mixed relay."

The Junior World Championships are due to continue tomorrow with the women’s individual qualification set to take place.

Men’s qualification will then be held the following day, before the individual competitions drew to a conclusion on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The mixed team relay is scheduled to bring the Championships to a conclusion on Sunday (September 18).
