Ukraine's Vasyl Kovalchuk defended his mixed 10 metre air rifle prone SH2 Paralympic title with a fine display of dead-eye shooting at the Olympic Shooting Centre in Rio de Janeiro.

The London 2012 champion, who lost his right arm after a bear attack at a zoo when 11-years-old, fired his way to a score of 201.1, a record for a Paralympic final.

South Korea's Geunsoo Kim tallied 200.7 for the silver medal as McKenna Dahl of the United States grabbed bronze with 189.5.

"The most difficult was the psychological part of training and in the competition today, but I had great support from my coach, my family and from the state as well allowing me to perform well," said Kovalchuk, part of a Ukranian gold rush which sees the country sit third on the medal table.

"The gold medal is great.

"It is most important to win this.

"Everyone has a goal and the goal is to win."

"It takes lots and lots of hard work by me and for the whole team."

The Games have been a family affair for the Ukrainian after his wife Olga won silver in the P2 women’s 10m air pistol SH1.

In the day's other final, China's Cuiping Zhang led the women's 50m three positions SH1 final from start to finish and triumphed with a total of 455.4, successfully defending her London 2012 crown.

Double Rio champion Veronika Vadovicova of Slovakia had to settle for silver this time on 449.4, as South Korean Lee Yunri shot her way to bronze on 449.4.

"I feel very happy and excited because after four years I didn't lose my training and I got this medal again," she said.

"In the first two competitions I didn't do very well.

"This time I told myself just do the competition, don't think of anyone or anything else."

"I want to keep going and keep training hard and to keep winning."
